A comfortable litter setup is one of the kindest things you can do for an indoor cat.

How many boxes?

A good rule of thumb is one box per cat plus one extra, spread across different spots in your home.

Choose the right box

Most cats prefer a large, uncovered box with low sides that is easy to step into. Kittens and senior cats especially appreciate easy entry.

Pick litter and location

  • Try an unscented, clumping litter first.
  • Place boxes in quiet, easy-to-reach spots.
  • Keep boxes away from food and water bowls.
  • Avoid putting them next to noisy appliances.

Keep it clean

Scoop at least once a day and top up as needed. Empty and wash the box with mild soap every one to four weeks, depending on your litter. Skip harsh, strongly scented cleaners.

When something changes

Going outside the box, straining or making frequent trips can signal a medical problem. Call your vet promptly. A male cat who strains without producing urine can be an emergency.
